What Is Peyronies Disease

Why Is My Penis Curved

Curvature of the penis (medical name Peyronies disease) is actually rather common; it is thought that around 40% of the male population have the problem to varying degrees. The majority not even realising that they have the problem and it certainly doesn’t cause them any problems.

For men suffering with severe cases of the problem, it can cause a problem so great that it can stop any normal sexual activity.

What Causes Peyronies Disease

Peyronies occurs when plaque or a hard lump begins to develop on the penis. It usually starts as an inflammation and can turn into a hardened scar type tissue.

The position of this hardened plaque can cause the penis to bend or twist towards the plaque as this area does not expand along with the unaffected tissue as the penis becomes erect.

Plaques underneath the penis will cause it to curve downwards, on the top will mean the penis bends upwards.

Doctors are not really sure about why Peyronies develops, injury or trauma can cause its development and sometimes it can be hereditary.

The majority of cases are minor,; they do not cause any problems and often disappear on their own over a period of time. Severe cases are not so easy to live with, and can sometimes require surgery to try and rectify.

Surgical Treatments For Peyronies Disease

Three Procedures Include

The ‘Lue’ Procedure. Removal of the plaque then followed by placement of a patch of skin or artificial material. This has a high rate of complications and causes a loss of erectile function and prevents the penis from becoming rigid.

The ‘Nesbit’ procedure. This is removal or pinching of tissue from the Plaque removal surgerybeforeopposite side of the penis to the plaque which can balance out the bending effect. This shortens the penis when it is erect.

An implant can be put into the penis to cause rigidity. Sometimes this implant will be enough to straighten the penis enough to provide a satisfactory result, other times, implantation is combined with a selection of incisions, grafting or plication (pinching or folding the skin).

Non Surgical Treatments For Peyronies Disease

Doctors have tried various drugs and vitamins to help cure the problem, steroids, Vitamin E and Calcium channel blockers have returned mixed results.

Without doubt, the most effective method of treating Peyronies disease is by using a penis traction device. Many surgeons believe that these are the safest and most effective way to treat the problem without causing the pain and side effects associated with surgical methods.

How Do Traction Devices Work

Penis Traction Devices work by placing the penis under gentle, yet permanent pulling pressure. Over a period of time the pressure causes the internal cells to divide and duplicate, this helps to break down the plaques, gradually straightening the penis. The additional skin and tissue cells also help to gradually lengthen the penis.

These devices have the best success rates in the treatment and curing of Peyronies disease.
